Rain, Rain, Rain!
This year's Porsche Club Race at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut took place in the rain. Although most racers would prefer not to run in the wet, Jol Dantzig was hoping for just that. With a car that is down on power compared to the rest of the field, rain is the great equalizer. "I'm very comfortable in the rain with this car," says Dantzig. "I've learned most of the tracks I know in the rain first," he continues. "The 914 is balanced perfectly for it." After qualifying in the rain with a time of 1:25.721, Dantzig would start eleventh. Racing on three year old rain tires, Dantzig immediately picked up three places on the first lap as everyone felt their way around on the soaked track. Moving as high as seventh overall Dantzig's 914 was passing and being repassed for the next six laps. On lap 10 the little 914 assumed the class lead and held it for two laps until a small mistake let Al Pyatak's 944 get by for the final two laps. "I was just being careful to get to the end," Dantzig states. "I guess I could have pressed harder, but I'm happy to finish 2nd." Final result: |
