Andy Summers and The Police

Jol Dantzig approached the members of the Police on the start of their second US tour. The single "Roxanne" was just starting to be played on radio. Hamer guitars were infamous in England, and the guys were keen to obtain some and work directly with the company.

Summers bought a Sunburst model from Dantzig, and ordered a Standard at the same time.

Below, Summers on stage at Madison Square Garden with the first "Prototype" model (note abbreviated pickguard). Jol Dantzig had flown the guitar to New York the day before and the instrument was broken by the airline. Dantzig borrowed the use a 48th street repair shop in order to make repairs immediately. Perhaps Summers pensive expression may reveal some concern about the neck coming off in the middle of the show! Happily, it did not.

Summers was instrumental in the development of the Hamer range, in that his wish to add a neck pickup to the Prototype fostered the creation of the Phantom model.

derived from the new Cruisebass shape penned by Dantzig, the Phantom retained the Prototype's "triple coil" arrangement while adding an additional single coil at the neck position. This allowed Summers to get the "in-between" sounds of a strat along with the humbucking tones. This was one of the industry's first "super-strat" type designs.

Shown above on stage with his namesake A5 Phantom model which he helped develop with Hamer.

The white guitar seen herre is the A7 which is the first high-end manufacturer guitar with the Roland 700 synth electronics. Andy used this instrument on the band's last two tours.
