Son of the legendary Shorty Medlocke, Ricky Medlocke formed Blackfoot in Jacksonville Florida. A veteran of the local bar band scene, Medlocke and company relocated to New Jersey in the early 1970s before making their mark. Interestingly, Medlocke started out as a drummer, and briefly played drums for Lynryd Skynyrd.

Medlocke was introduced to Jol Dantzig

through a mutual friend, which resulted in Medlocke's first visit to Hamer's Arlington Heights workshop. Three Hamer Standard guitars were commissioned, two of which were fitted with sixties vintage aftermarket tremolos.
